One part education, one part inspiration – the Foundation supports programs and initiatives to promote career opportunities and enhance the industry’s service to the public.
Programs you can support:
ProStart is a career and technical education program that unites the foodservice industry and the classroom to teach high school students culinary skills and restaurant management principles, as well as employability skills such as communication, teamwork, professionalism and time management.
The WLRAEF awards more than half a million dollars in scholarships to high school graduates, undergraduate students and educators to support educational pursuits in the restaurant and foodservice industry.
Professional development opportunities are available to ProStart educators through annual Summer Institutes and the NRAEF’s Certified Secondary Foodservice Educator Certification. These programs provide technical and professional instruction for educators who focus on restaurant- and foodservice- sector instruction.
Through awards and recognitions, the Foundation encourages and celebrates restaurant businesses and individuals who advance their communities through service. The awards also recognize companies within the industry that provide opportunity for employees to achieve the American dream.
The NRAEF regularly conducts workforce research to gain insight into the restaurant and foodservice workforce. For example, our “Who Works in the U.S. Restaurant Industry,” released in 2014, is the most extensive research of the restaurant-sector workforce in decades. New research that identifies skilled learned in first jobs in the restaurant sector as well as comprehensive career pathways research is forthcoming.
Through military-focused programming, the Foundation provides training, support and recognition to military hospitality personnel and programs from all branches of the U.S. military and promotes restaurant and hospitality career options for veterans and their families.
The WLRAEF supports workforce development tools and initiatives to prepare people for careers in the restaurant and foodservice industry, the nation’s second-largest private sector employer. In 2015, the NRAEF national office launched the first dedicated competency model for the industry – the Food and Beverage Service Competency Model –that charts the knowledge, skills and abilities to achieve career success in the industry. The Foundation also is developing programming and partnerships to serve the Opportunity Youth audience.
